From that perspective, it can be described in one of three architecture categories: as an island air gapped from the outside world, as a logically isolated segment of a public network, or as a hybrid of the two. Each of those models provides discrete advantages for different types of deployments as well as different considerations for lawful interception, signaling visibility, and data correlation.
In a self-contained “island” architecture, all network functions and equipment reside within the private network, under the control of the operating organization. This model is common in remote infrastructure such as oil rigs or in high-security ones such as energy or defense installations and correctional facilities. Because the private operator controls the full stack, it has sole responsibility for interception mechanisms, data retention, and location services.
MNOs can define private networks using network slicing to create logical segments of the public network, using MNO fabric while retaining isolation from outside traffic. Using existing infrastructure is particularly valuable for implementations over very large areas, such as transportation corridors and distributed utility grids. While deployments can rely on the MNO for lawful interception compliance, organizations still require visibility into the locations and behavior of devices.
Hybrid deployments blend private RAN infrastructure with MNO‑hosted core services. Geofencing and Quiet Zones for High-Security Facilities
To enforce strict mobile‑device policies in sensitive environments, SS8 offers the Quiet Zone solution, which draws on its geofencing, passive location, active location, and heuristic analysis technologies. Monitoring and control capabilities within established Quiet Zones make it possible to identify and disable voice and data services for unauthorized mobile devices, including phones and anything else equipped with a SIM. This capability is often used to identify contraband cell phones in prisons, alongside applications from detecting a bomb detonation device to an illicit camera exfiltrating information from a secure facility.
The SS8 platform’s passive location technology defines a geofence perimeter around the Quiet Zone and identifies devices on the cellular network as they enter or exit. Enforcement practices include maintaining an Allow list that grants service to known, authorized devices such as handsets owned by trusted personnel. Visitors, vendors, and nearby residents can be temporarily added to the Allow List based on network policy. Disallowed devices can be added to a Deny List, with full auditability and regulatory confirmation workflows.
When detected, potentially unauthorized devices can be shifted to active location monitoring, with heuristics such as pattern-of-life analysis to detect their movements, dwell time, and behavior within the geofence. When the system determines with high confidence that a candidate device for enforcement is physically inside the restricted area, it can be manually or automatically disabled on the network.
